How to Measure Windows for Plantation Shutters — Easy DIY Guide

Measuring your windows for plantation shutters is easier than you think, and getting it right will save you money on custom orders from Amazon.

As a Houston homeowner, you need to consider our Texas heat and window trim. Here is how we measure for clients in Houston:

Step 1: Decide Inside Mount vs Outside Mount

Inside mount sits inside your window frame — clean, modern look. Outside mount covers the whole window — better for blocking Texas sun and if your window is not perfectly square.

Step 2: For Inside Mount

Measure width in 3 places: top, middle, bottom of your window. Use the smallest number. Then measure height in 3 places: left, middle, right. Use the smallest number again. That is your ordering size.

Step 3: For Outside Mount

Measure width of area you want to cover and add 2–4 inches on each side to block light. Measure height and add 2–4 inches top and bottom.

Pro Tip for Texas Homes

Our windows swell small in summer heat. Always measure twice and order exact. If your window is more than 1/4 inch out of square, go for outside mount — it hides imperfections.
